Research programmes

We focus on host–pathogen interactions, emerging zoonotic diseases, comparative immunology and translation of reservoir-host biology into therapeutic and preparedness technologies.

1. Comparative genomics of viral tolerance

We use mammalian and bat comparative genomics to identify immune genes and pathways under lineage-specific adaptation, then test candidate mechanisms experimentally in cellular systems.

2. Reservoir host immunology

The lab studies how bats balance antiviral defence and restrained inflammation, including interferon-stimulated genes, inflammasome regulation, ISGylation and immune-cell activation.

3. Viral entry, receptors and attachment factors

We apply VSV/lentiviral pseudovirus assays, receptor libraries and host-factor screens to define viral entry routes, host range barriers and zoonotic potential.

The team develops field-compatible detection technologies, reagents and sample-to-answer workflows for wildlife and human surveillance at high-risk interfaces.
